Hi folks,

First of all I am pleased to announce that the next meeting is a joint
effort by SAGE-AU[1] (the System Administrators Guild of Australia) and
SLPWA[2] (Society of Linux Professionals, WA).

Our next meeting will be this coming Wednesday, March 3rd 2004. We'll
begin gathering from 6pm at the back of the Moon & Sixpence pub and will
move into the Raine Room around 6.30pm for our presentation from Perth
IT laywer and general good-guy, Jeremy Malcolm.

This month's topic is "The Darker Side of I.T." - well, our speaker and
I didn't decide on a proper name for the presentation so I've just made
that one up! =)

By the 'darker side' we are referring to the law, and specifically
copyright. Jeremy's own, more accurate précis follows:

Jeremy Malcolm is an Information Technology lawyer who also manages a
local IT consultancy Terminus Network Services. He will be talking on
two current topics of interest. First, drawing on his talk at the
recent Linux Conference in Adelaide, he will speak about The SCO
Group's litigation against IBM over alleged intellectual property
violations in the Linux kernel. Although the litigation itself is
widely tipped to fail, SCO's point is that the open source development
model does not adequately vet contributors' code for violations of
intellectual property rights. This points to the need for open source
developers to take steps to address this and other issues implicit in
the way open source code is written. Secondly Jeremy will speak about
the Free Trade Agreement that was agreed between the Australian and
the United States trade ministers in Washington DC on 8 February 2004,
and the effect that this agreement will have on the Australian ICT
industries arising out of the changes it will require to the
  protection of copyright.

This should be a very interesting presentation!

The Moon and Sixpence pub is located at 300 Murray Street in Perth. To
find "The Snook", come in the front door of the pub, follow the bar
around to your left, and enter the large back room ("The Stables"). On
your left-hand side is the entrance to "The Snook", which should have a
sign up for SAGE-AU. We will get a plate or two of sandwiches, with
counter meals and a variety of beers available from the bar.

Street parking is available for free to those with excellent timing, and
there's paid parking for the rest of us. Public transport is also an
attractive option, being only a few hundred metres from the Perth Train
Station and the Wellington St bus station.

Please pass this information on to any party you feel might be
interested! It would be great to see some new faces this month.

Best regards,

Andrew S.

P.S. ... and on the social side of things, Jeremy is now engaged! And
you thought he didn't even have a social life.

"Is there? Well I'd like to meet him. I could do with a good laugh."
